THE INNER CHILD“Everyone is born creative; everyone is given a box of crayons in kindergarten. Then when you hit puberty they take the crayons away and replace them with dry, uninspiring books on algebra, history, etc. Being suddenly hit years later with the 'creative bug' is just a wee voice telling you, 'I'd like my crayons back, please.” The inner-child, that part of us, often compartmentalized and conveniently packed away deep within our subconscious mind. The "inner child" refers to the compendium of our emotional & psychological memories and experiences from conception to early puberty. This is the time of rapid learning & growth and our greatest exposure to social conditioning. By exploring our inner child, we may become more aware of patterns of self-sabotage, self-defeating behaviours, fears & insecurities. Furthermore, we may even rekindle long lost passions, creativity & zest for life. After recently facilitating a guided meditation to explore the inner-child, the discussion after gave great insight into the impact that the past can have on the present. Yes, we can say to simply “let it go”; but by rediscovering the inner child, my class come out feeling more invigorated, more motivated, more passionate about life. It’s a vast concept that certainly can accommodate many meditations & reflections. To address wounds & traumas from the childhood, abandonment issues, security issues, the monsters or demons of our past, can all have a tremendous impact on your present life. “She held herself until the sobs of the child inside subsided entirely. I love you, she told herself. It will all be okay.” It excites me too, that we can bring back into our lives, things, precious things from our past. The confidence that perhaps was lost, the energy to just run and keep on running for the sheer joy of it, to create & use our imagination actively, & to enjoy learning, wondering, and day-dreaming without the guilt trip that we should use our time more wisely. What could possibly be more important than embracing the joy of living, to use our time to create a joyful life? To sneak past, even for a brief moment from the social conditioning that binds us, and see that we are limitless. To glimpse that our bindings that seem insurmountable are but a fabrication of our own making. “Let us liberate ourselves from any form of control. Let us focus at the inner drum, where the rhythm aligns with that of our heart. The measure of responsibility, equals to the need for evolution. Just listen, the inner child, let it whisper in your ear.” Connecting with your inner-child can be useful to strengthen the links with your past. It is important to live in the present, but the past influences the person you are today. By embracing, accepting, nurturing & encouraging the child within, the child who still dwells within you, you can open yourself to an amazing journey of self-discovery and create a future of your own making.
